Spring’s Gentle Arrival

After a long winter’s rest, I am ready to welcome spring’s gentle arrival with open arms! My mood is lifted now that the sun is out more often. As the days get longer and the weather warmer, I can feel the magic in the air as nature slowly comes back to life after a short period of cold and darkness. Sounds of birds chirping have become music to my ears. Spring flowers had just begun to emerge once again from their long annual slumber, waiting for the right conditions to show off their lovely blooms.

March has been a busy month, starting with seed sowing and prepping the garden beds. This year, I want to focus on growing what I actually like to eat. In the past, I wanted to grow everything, including veggies and herbs I don’t consume or use often. I also want to start growing more flowers this year, particularly in the areas surrounding my raised garden beds. My goal is to slowly grow flowers along the fence, in hopes that they’ll add more character to the garden and attract more beneficial insects. I have a distinct vision in my head what my garden could look like and I hope to bring it to fruition. I have yet decided what flowers I want to grow. Zinnia, cosmos, echinacea, rudbeckia, and sunflower are at the top of my list. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear it!

Once the seedlings start to grow their true leaves and the weather gets a bit warmer, they’ll be hardened off first before settling into their new home in the garden beds. This spring I’m growing bok choy, Swiss chard, spinach, arugula, sorrel, kale, carrots, celery (from the garden center), sugar peas, and lettuce blends. I’m also growing garlic for the first time. They were planted in late October of last year. I can’t wait to see them grow as the season progresses. Here’s hoping to a wonderful season ahead!
